Coldplay se met à travailler sur leur premier album en novembre 1999. Sorti en mars 2000, le single Shiver rentre dans le top 40 anglais (à la place 35) et le titre bénéficie de quelques diffusions sur MTV.

Juin 2000 marque réellement le début de Coldplay : le single Yellow se place quatrième du hit-parade britannique et le public découvre le groupe. L'album Parachutes sort le 10 juillet 2000 et se place numéro 1 des ventes d'albums anglais dès sa sortie. Les ventes de l'album estimées à 40 000 par Parlophone lors du lancement atteignent alors 1,6 million d'exemplaires au Royaume-Uni à la fin de l'année ! L'album rencontre un fort succès en Europe et Parachutes sort en novembre 2000 aux États-Unis où il y rencontre aussi un certain succès. Parachutes est recompensé par un Grammy Award en 2002 comme meilleur album de musique alternative.

L'album a été critiqué pour des ressemblances avec les albums The Bends et OK Computer de Radiohead.

L'album a été interdit en Chine, le gouvernement chinois ayant pris trop au sérieux les paroles de la chanson Spies.

L'album A Rush of Blood to the Head est enregistré à partir d'octobre 2001, et sort le 26 août 2002. Avec ces trois titres phares, In My Place, The Scientist et Clocks, l'album est salué par la critique.

Coldplay part en tournée pour un an de juin 2002 à septembre 2003. La tournée rappelle celles de U2 par ses effets de lumières. Un CD live Live 2003 est enregistré et le concert de Sydney est filmé pour sortir en DVD.

L'album A Rush of Blood to the Head est récompensé par quatre Grammy Awards et un Brit Award en 2003.

En décembre 2003, Coldplay enregistre une reprise des Pretenders : 2000 Miles. Ce titre fut mis en vente via internet par téléchargement. Les fonds récoltés furent reversés à deux associations : "Future Forests" et "Stop Handgun Violence".

A Rush of blood to the head rappelle, par les instruments, l'été (Daylight, Warning Sign). La batterie est déjà beaucoup plus présente, la guitare classique laisse place à l'éléctrique, pour le grand bonheur des fans. D'ailleurs, le début de la chanson Warning Sign a été utilisé pour la série américaine Summerland, pour leur générique de fin.

X & Y
Le troisième album de Coldplay, X&Y, sort le 6 juin 2005 et s'installe dès sa sortie à la première place des hit parades dans 28 pays. C'est l'album le plus vendu en 2005 avec 8,5 millions d'exemplaires écoulés dans le monde. Le premier single était Speed of Sound qui passait à la radio depuis le mois d'avril. Deux autres singles sortent en 2005 : Fix You en septembre et Talk en décembre. Une tournée mondiale Twisted Logic Tour suit la sortie de l'album; elle commence en juin 2005 pour se finir en juillet 2006.

Le groupe gagne un Grammy Awards pour la meilleure chanson de l'année, Speed of Sound.

Malgré le succès de l'album, les critiques le trouvent moins réussi que le précédent A Rush of Blood to the Head.
